Not sure yet that Soul Food is the right organization to get involved with? Here you may find answers to some general questions you may have about the logistics of what we do.

How many hours per week will I have to devote to Soul Food as a volunteer?
Becoming a regular volunteer for Soul Food involves very little time commitment, which is definitely an advantage for your average busy university student! The average volunteer is only committing to making a delivery, from the cafeteria to one of the shelters, about once a week, once every two weeks or even less often than that depending on the availability you provide us with. Each delivery only takes about twenty minutes to half-an-hour. With the number of volunteers available to us, we offer a lot of flexibility in our delivery schedule that will be able to accommodate your hectic schedule.

What does a regular delivery consist of?
Once you are put on a delivery schedule, you will receive an e-mail a couple days before every run you are scheduled for. The e-mail will detail:

  • what day of the week you’ll be making the delivery,
  • to which shelter you are bringing the food to,
  • which cafeteria you are delivering the food from, and at;
  • what time you should meet at the back of that cafeteria on the night of your delivery

When you arrive at the back of the cafeteria, the Sodexo employees will have already prepared the trays of food for you to take to the shelter. Every delivery is done by two regular volunteers and a student driver volunteer. The three volunteers will put the trays of food in the driver volunteer’s car, call the local shelter to prepare then for your arrival, then drive to the shelter to drop off the trays of unconsumed food. The volunteers then collect any trays that the shelter is ready to return to the cafeteria and bring it back to the cafeteria they came from. The whole delivery should only take about 20 to 30 minutes.

Do we get to go into the shelters ourselves?
Yes. With the exception of the Kingston Youth Shelter, you will be bringing the trays of food by hand into the shelter.

Do I need a car to volunteer?
No, you don’t need a car to volunteer. You can just sign up to be one of the regular volunteers that meets up at the back of the cafeteria to load the trays into the car and bring the trays into the shelter.

Can I volunteer with a friend?
Yes, you can sign up to volunteer with a friend and we will try our best to schedule you to make deliveries with each other – depending on the availability you provide us with.

Is there more I can get involved with than just the nightly deliveries?
Yes. Soul Food also runs a Social Awareness Committee which tries to make time to volunteer for other local initiatives such as Martha’s Table, as well as raise awareness about our organization on the Queen’s campus.
